Will the Volkswagen ID.4 have free charging access?

Three Years of Free Charging for VW ID.4 Owners at Electrify America Stations

Automakers are commencing a sizable push for electric vehicles, rolling out a slew of the models in the increasingly near future. Volkswagen is not exempt from the frenzy, having recently released its exciting ID.4 electric SUV for pre-orders. Soon, VW hopes, many drivers will make the switch to an EV; preferably theirs.

However, one factor that tends to hold prospective EV buyers back is something called “range anxiety.” What is VW doing to alleviate range anxiety with its ID.4?

Volkswagen is providing three full years of unlimited free charging on the nation’s largest DC fast charging network to buyers of the ID.4. This privilege is provided to drivers at no additional cost to the vehicle’s purchase price.

The result, VW hopes, is that customers will experience increased range confidence; across the country, after all, 96 percent of the population live within 120 miles of an Electrify America charger. The charging plan can be conveniently managed through an app provided by Electrify America.

What is Electrify America?

Electrify America is a growing network of fast-charging kiosks backed by multiple automakers. Currently, the network has 460 operational stations nationwide, for a total of over 2,000 chargers. Many of them lie along a recently completed EV route that connects Los Angeles to Washington D.C.

Electrify America plans to continue expanding across the U.S. The company pledges to have around 800 stations and 3,500 chargers online by the end of 2021. If construction rates of both networks remain the same, Electrify America could match Tesla’s network coverage by early 2024. By that time, Volkswagen aims to be selling half a million ID.4 models annually.

How fast can Electrify America stations charge?

Some Electrify America chargers are capable of ultra-fast 350-kilowatt fast charging. This is certainly powerful enough for the ID.4, which is anticipated to accept up to 150 kW.
